FORMATIVE YEARS
Born in New Jersey and raised among the corn fields and fishing holes of rural NJ, Matlosz’s burgeoning passion for film he cites viewings of Jaws, (Cinematography by Bill Butler) and the works of Roger Deakins, Conrad Hall and Vittorio Storaro as seminal moments) gave him the drive to move onward and upward. Matlosz moved to California in 1989 with a BA and AA in media studies and an AA in photography, on a hope and a prayer, full of drive and passion that dreams do come true.
PHILOSOPHY
Matlosz has a gut instinct for how things should and do work in cinematography. He is determined to put his whole heart and mind behind his style and lighting aesthetic, driven by what feels most organic in the representation of action and reaction on screen. His pace and versatility set him apart – not only is he quick to make technical and artistic decisions, he embraces visual contrast aptly relative to the job at hand.
He believes a cinematographer’s most important trait is flexibility, flexibility nurtured by experience, along with willingness to learn, listen and grow. He is known for keeping crews in high spirits on shoot.
HOBBIES
Matlosz also dabbles in the culinary arts and courts the romance of the grill – everything from whole birds to appetizers and deserts. Also, an avid mountain biker and road cyclist, he is involved in a range of sports – not as a spectator, always participating – whether it be coaching kids’ teams or playing soccer, baseball, basketball…
FUTURE THOUGHTS
Someday, he says, he may change his name to something more European and exotic as a career move. But for now he’s DP Jim Matlosz, represented in Los Angeles by Dattner Dispoto and Associates.
